This portable microphone is a little beast that records audio in 96 kHz and 24-bit resolution and one of the better computerized recorders running on battery power. It also has an AC adapter, but can also work with USB supplied power.

Initially intended for music artists, the mic turned out to be particularly prevalent with DSLR camera users and movie producers over other compact recorders since it has a direct XLR microphone connector and it has phantom power as well.

It records upwards of four stations immediately from the inherent mics and also from two outer sources.

As compact handheld microphones are concerned, this one is bulkier/heavier and has many more components under the hood than some competitors. Although it may not fit perfectly into your pant pockets, if you’re wearing cargo pants or shorts, you don’t have any problems.

And it has a variety of uses – from recording lectures from a podium or mounting it to tripods for cameras or even a microphone stand with its connectors and sockets.

The way the audio turns out is pretty great too. The auto level control is pretty fantastic and doesn’t lead to pumpy audio and weird high and low volumes. It’s kind of like having a compressor do the work for you during recording.

zoom-h4nHere’s a quick rundown of the technical specs:

  • 1, 48 and 96 kHz (ksps) recording at 16-or 24-bits as WAV documents.
  • MP3 recording from 48kbps to 320bps.
  • Dynamic compressor and Limiter
  • 24-bit 128x oversampliing DAC

It works awesome. You’ll have it figured out in no time and will be able to quickly record broadcast quality audio. At the point when the record light is flickering it means the microphone is ready to record and when it remains solid, you’re actually recording audio.

Need to make an easily downloadable file? Simply record as an MP3 and you can easily transfer it.

If you’re looking for a really good handheld microphone, the Zoom H4N can work wonders for you. There are a lot of competitors out there, but the Zoom series of mics has always been well regarded by amateurs and enthusiasts alike. All in all it’s a great mic that will come in handy for artists, students, business people, videographers and much more.
