Heil PR40 ReviewHere we are – the beast of all beastly podcasting microphones, the Heil PR40 Dynamic Studio microphone. This mic is touted as the ultimate podcasting mic by many high-level podcasters and it damn well should be considering the price tag.

This microphone is a straight up studio quality microphone and may be a bit overkill for anyone just starting out in the podcasting world. However, if you’re really serious about it and want something that delivers quality over the long term, this may be the right mic for you. If you have the budget, that is.

The microphone comes in at about $327 for the mic standalone and $399 for the whole kit (including shock-mount, broadcast arm and cable). It features a very large, low mass diaphragm and a very wide frequency response rate. It also has an internal breath blast filter (kind of like a pop-screen) to cut down on those harsh tones that sometimes happen during recordings.

It’s touted as a great drum for bass drums and guitars, but is also perfect for getting crisp, clean vocal recordings as well. It’s hugely popular for a reason. But for some, it may be a bit over-kill. If you have the budget and want a higher-end microphone then this is definitely an option for you.

But be warned it doesn’t not have a USB connector, meaning you’ll need an audio interface for it.

Here’s a quick look at some specs:

  • Steel housing with large diaphragm
  • 28hz-20,000hz frequency response
  • Cardioid Polar Pattern

The PR 40 is definitely a high-performance microphone, but is probably over-kill for a lot of podcasters. If you’ve got a professional audio interface, and are looking for a microphone you can use to record professional vocals and instruments (not just podcasts) it may be the perfect microphone for you.

If you’re just looking for a podcasting microphone, then you’ll probably want a different model that costs less.
